Let me tell you a story about how I started my journey in fitness and healthy lifestyle. I started working out in the gym back in 2010 when I was 18 years old.
The main reason that motivated me to start was after I saw a few pictures of myself without a shirt for a weekend of drinking and partying and I really didn’t like what I saw and wanted a change as soon as possible. At the beginning I was going 3-4 times a week to a really old gym in the basement of a school in my neighbourhood.
I was quite motivated but I had no idea whatsoever what exactly am I doing or anything about nutrition. Most of the times I was alone in the gym so I didn’t have anyone to ask either. I was doing the exact same exercises every time in the same order. I didn’t even train legs. But I was persistent. Four times a week every week. I didn’t know how to eat to gain muscle mass neither did I know how to eat to cut body fat. I was just working out and eating whatever. I was eating a lot though and I had quite a lot of strength at the beginning, that was a bigger part of my motivation. Every 3-4 workouts I was trying to beat my maximum on the exercises that I was doing. At that time I never did deadlifts or squats because of ‘rumours’ and ‘stories’ of how bad and dangerous those exercises are for the body. That’s how I went through my first year of fitness. I was working out regularly so I increased my strength and mass quite a bit but I was doing only a few different exercises so I had almost no control of how to shape up my muscles. The fact that I didn’t know how to eat properly was the other reason that I couldn’t achieve any definition on the muscle mass that I was gaining.
After 11 months of regular working out, one night I saw a motivational fitness video on the internet made by Lazar Angelov. After I saw the video I was really amazed and motivated, all I wanted was to achieve a physique like that. I looked him up on the Internet and contacted him via email. He agreed to coach me 4 times a week. A month later I was already training with him coaching me, I was taking proper nutrition supplements and I had a great nutrition plan prepared by him for my specific goals which were to gain muscle mass and bulk up. When I started working out with him I was barely 80kg. We did hard work every workout every week every month for a year and then another year. I wasn’t paying much attention to the mirror, to my weight, to other people’s opinions. I wasn’t taking pictures or showing off. I was trying to follow my nutrition plan as best as I could. I quit drinking because I wasn’t able to workout or recover properly after drinking alcohol. I wasn’t partying or staying out late. Just regular hard work in the gym. No breaks, no vacations, no excuses. The gym that we worked out at was at the other end of the town, it took me 40 minutes to get there and 40 minutes to get back but that wasn’t an obstacle. It didn’t matter if it was -20 degrees with snow up to my waist or pouring rain or +40 degrees in the summer under the sun. Day in and day out we were working hard, I was gaining experience constantly I was learning something new all the time every time – about nutrition, about exercises, about recovering, about the healthy lifestyle. After half an year of working out with Lazar, I gained about 15kg, with a decent amount of fat but I was still really bulked up and increased my strength by a lot.
That’s when we started cutting. New workout routine and new nutrition plan for shredding the body fat. After another 4-5 months of working out like this I’ve lost some of the body fat that I gained while bulking while maintaining most of the muscle mass. When I compared the results and the progress I was pleased but never satisfied.
I knew it was just the beginning. We did the same bulking then cutting for another year after that. After I’ve learned almost everything he could teach me about training and nutrition Lazar and I decided that I am ready to start working out on my own.
When I started working out on my own I kept going to the same gym even though it was so far away, I really liked it there, I knew all the people there, Lazar was working out there too so I could always ask him for some advice or help if needed. I started working out more days a week. Divided all the groups in separate days so I was working out 5-6 times a week. No breaks no vacations, no holidays. It didn’t matter if it was Christmas or New Year’s Eve or my birthday, if it was training day I was in the gym working hard. I kept doing the bulking into cutting cycles trying to improve every day on every detail. The progress was my biggest motivation. Slow and steady I never stopped moving forward, no looking back or sideways, step by step. It became a lifestyle, the gym the healthy nutrition. Out of thousands of workouts I don’t remember leaving the gym in a bad mood even once. I was determined to not let anyone or anything stand in my way. Always wanted more, I was never satisfied 6 years later I still think of it as just the beginning. Dedication and discipline were my two strongest suits, I may not have had the fastest or the most amazing progress but I sure as hell was giving my 100% to work as hard as I can. I think that everyone can improve and achieve his goals as long as he believes and puts his mind into it. Six years now and here I am. You can follow my progress or join me on the journey.
