Every guy or girl who go to the gym have the fear that if they stop working out for 2-3 months their results will be gone. Even some people are scared to take a rest for a week, because they don’t want to stop their progress and lose muscle mass. For short period of time, like 10 days, you will hardly see some regress, but if you stop lifting for months your muscles will start to shrink. After that most people don’t have the will to get beck in the gym, because they think that they have to start from the beginning. After doing something for so long and than if you have to do it for years again just to reach the point where you were before, yes it sounds scary. But here is where muscle memory helps us.
If you have spent atleast some months working out and than take a brake and start again you will notice that you regain size and strength much faster. First when you start working out your body start to produce nuclie, which control protein synthesis. To get bigger you need more nuclie to grow more muscles and feel them with protein. Resistance training make the body to add more nuclei to muscle fibers which make the muscles grow bigger. So when you stop working out your muscles are atrophying but the nuclei in muscles do not. So when you start working out again you are able to get beck in where you were before faster.
Scientist believe for a long time that the new muscles nuclei died short after you stop hitting the gym. But later studies show that they stay in your muscles at least for three months. A lot of scientists even clame that they never die.
This information is great because knowing that rest for 1-2 weeks won’t set you back is amazing. There are even studies that shows people who rest for a week in every 4 weeks and people who don’t rest at all have made similar progress. So people who take a rest every 4 weeks are able to catch up those who don’t.
