The wise men say that people need to have a strong mind in order to achieve a strong body. One has to put half of his mind in figuring out what the best approach towards the goals is and the other half in finding the motivation to stay strong and make it work.
Let me share with you my personal professional experience about the motivation.
For me the motivation is the crucial element and the best advice I could give is to look for all kind and sources of motivation. The motivation is always powerful and plays major role in the life of every successful person. The principle “the more the better” is completely valid. When you feel lonely and there isn’t anyone around just make your-own motivation. When you feel bad, sad, tired, worried, week emotionally or physically, motivation is what helps you come through and follow up on your goals and dreams.
Let’s talk about fitness and its specific sports motivation. It plays one of the most important roles in a person’s fitness journey. The motivation and the mindset of a person contribute towards establishing positive habits of living healthy – eating, training and resting. It helps progress and pushing forward towards the desirable fitness goals.
Some people look for motivation from external sources. External motivation in fitness comes mostly from fitness videos, pictures or events showing some famous people from the fitness industry who’s achievements and accomplishments inspire in some way or another. Even though those sources of motivation aren’t bad, the best source of motivation should be a person’s own achievements, accomplishments, positive results and outcomes of his actions. External sources of motivation might be fascinating but without any guaranty of effect on a long-term. At some point they deplete, become repetitive and eventually outdated. The danger is not to get too used to the perfectly shaped bodies and big muscles, so they are no longer as relevant as they have been at the beginning.
On the contrary – the self-motivation is always fuelled by the person’s progress and as long as he keeps moving forward towards his goals his motivation will be sustained. The self-motivation in fitness and sports can be viewed from two different angles – one is the “positive” and the other one is the “negative”.
The negative one is when a person sees him-self in a negative way i.e. the person is so unsatisfied with his look or overall physical shape and decides that nothing has left for him than to start working out to improve his life. Even though this type of motivation could be seen as negative it can be pretty powerful and lead to great results in persistent people. The downside of this type of motivation is that it has been conceived by negative thoughts and feelings which led the person to take action.
On the other side there it comes the positive power of the self-motivation. It is driven by a person’s progress and results. The bigger they are the more motivated a person is to keep pushing himself forward. It helps a person to keep following his healthy habits and lifestyle even if they require a lot of sacrifices and hard work, because he knows how far he’s come and doesn’t want to go backwards or stop progressing. The downside of this kind of positive motivations is that eventually everyone in fitness and sports reaches a point of his journey when he barely notices any movement forward or none at all. This is where everyone who has a strong personal character and strong mentality would keep pushing forward and giving it his best efforts to maintain and improve his results and achievements.
Another source of motivation is the change. New ideas and new approaches towards your goals are always motivating and exciting. Everyone feels more motivated when making changes to his habits and routines because with change people expect new, different and better results.
Strong motivation can also come with a person close to you. Having and sharing the same interests with a person that is really close to you always helps greatly for your positive mindset and motivation. Even if you don’t share the same interest, that certain close person’s support and understanding of your passion for fitness and sports should be a strong enough motivation for you to keep moving forward. It goes both ways, you should also always try to understand and support the people closest to you so you can keep them motivated.
The lack of motivation can hold back even those who have the best conditions to work with and work the hardest and make the most effort. For example if there are two different people who have to do their early morning workouts – they are both tired and not feeling very well. Both of them have achieved similar physiques. One of them is really motivated by his results even though he is moving forward slowly and the other one lacks all motivation because he is demoralized by the slow progress. The motivated one will always do a better workout both with his mind and his body and will keep slowly moving forward while the other guy might stop completely moving forward altogether.
To summarise it – the motivation is crucial for everything you do in life and even more so in fitness and sports. Set your goals and follow them, learn and find motivation from those who inspire you! Once you get going and start moving forward, be your own motivation! Let it drive you through all the hard times on your way to success!
